Good sleep is incredibly important for health.
We know that it improves, our cognitive powers, ability to concentrate, immune function, vitality, hormone function and general feeling of well-being. We know that when we sleep well, we wake mentally refreshed and physically rejuvenated ready to start a new day. We also sense the mysterious “other world” of night time with a mind free to dream that bring us benefits we can’t describe. Relaxing sleep can bring us gifts: who of us has battled anxiously with making a decision only to wake up with clarity and insight after “sleeping on it”?
You may find it interesting that studies of “Delta” brainwaves (which are the slowest that have been detected in humans) are only possible in deep sleep or meditation. And, incredibly, they are associated with levels of empathy, our vital human requisite for understanding and feeling for others, for cooperation, kindness and compassion. No wonder that without good quality sleep we are liable to be without these positive and vital attributes that create a world we all want to live in.
Problems revolving around sleep are rife.
Whether there is lack of sleep from an “external cause” such as caring for a crying baby or working night shifts, or whether problems develop such as a “busy brain”, anxiety, restlessness, getting up for the loo, nightmares, itching, physical pain, hot sweats, tinnitus, palpitations… or whether someone has had problems with sleeping the whole of their lives, the result is that the body is seriously affected. Energy is depleted, mood and motivation sink; it becomes difficult to solve problems, make decisions, concentrate; relationships suffer because of altered mood and irritability. In the long-term, damage to the physical and mental state of our bodies can ensue, including depression and anxiety. The cycle of symptoms causing bad sleep and bad sleep causing ill-health is hard to break.
So, how could homeopathy help?
Homeopathy considers all symptoms with in the context of the whole person and treats the underlying cause – taking into account how symptoms have developed and how the person experiences them. Homeopathic medicines are used to stimulate and assist the body’s own natural healing process which involves all the systems and functions of the body to bring it to a healthy balance.
A homeopath always inquires about someone’s sleep during case-taking even if sleep is not the main complaint because it is such an important function of health: it is important to know how restful a person’s sleep is in order to know how well (or otherwise) s/he is. In getting well (from any complaint), the homeopath expects to see an improvement in the quality of sleep.
