Being in best health means that people are able to live their lives to the full, with energy, purpose and happiness.
Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine used widely around the world, based on unchanging principles and laws and over 200 years of development. It draws upon both science and art. Over 7000 homeopathic medicines (remedies) derived mainly from the kingdoms of minerals, plants and animals are in use today. Homeopathy has a huge scope and can be used to help anything from a simple bruise to complex, chronic illness, always looking at how an individual expresses their symptoms.
Natural Healing – what is the body trying to do?
The body has intelligent design and it strives to maintain optimum health, keeping all its systems and functions regulated and in harmony (termed “homeostasis”). Symptoms of disease are part of this intelligent design. For example, if a child eats a poisonous berry, the body may produce vomiting as a first measure to rid itself of toxic effects with fever and malaise as further measures. This is a healthy response illustrating that a symptom is a reaction to a problem rather than the problem itself.
When symptoms are prevented from expressing, important healing processes are not able to complete. So, in our example, if the same child does not vomit and an anti-pyretic is given to reduce the fever then toxin remains and the body must find a deeper set of symptoms (reactions) to try to bring about health – perhaps a rash on the skin. This represents a worse state of health. In daily life, too, we are bombarded with emotional and mental stress as well as taking in toxins that do not belong in our bodies from our environment. The body has a lot of work to do to keep in the best health it can manage!
It is when the body becomes stressed beyond its normal limits that reactions cannot deal with the problem and symptoms persist. Then we experience imbalance and discomfort in body and mind. We become “stuck” with symptoms and feelings that become more and more difficult to help.
Homeopaths recognise that many mind and physical symptoms are connected and that all symptoms arising in the body are part of its coordinated attempt to heal the whole organism. Symptoms are clues representing the underlying cause and it is this cause that must be healed. Homeopaths use remedies to stimulate the healing system to complete the processes needed to gain health. In other words, homeopathy works with the body’s own intelligent design, supporting its actions holistically.
In a consultation, the homeopath needs to know about the whole person: their history, health picture and personality which are all taken into account in order to choose a prescription and treat the underlying cause of the illness.
Like Cures Like
Homeopathy was developed by Dr Samuel Hahneman (1755 – 1843), a German chemist and physician. The word “homeopathy” means “similar suffering” and an important principle of homeopathy is the Law of Similars, often referred to as “Like Cures Like”. It means that a substance known to cause symptoms in a living organism when given in a large dose can also be used to cure those same symptoms when given in very micro doses. An everyday example of this is the onion – cutting one causes the eyes and nose to water profusely in most people and Allium Cepa (onion in homeopathic dose) is often employed for the common cold. Thus, homeopathy is a matching process: finding a remedy which has the ability to produce the symptoms it is employed to cure. This observation of healing has been known and put to use practically since before the time of Hippocrates.
An individual prescription
Everybody is different: each person experiences their illness in their own, unique way and homeopathy can take account of this. This second important principle of homeopathy means that patients receive individual, tailor-made prescriptions to suit their constitution and their level of health rather than a “one size fits all” approach.
Preparation and Safety
Remedies are given as small pills or liquids and are easy and pleasant to take. They are derived from plants, minerals and other natural sources. To make a substance homeopathic the crude material undergoes a unique preparation where it is successively diluted and shaken (termed “succussion”) – which transforms it into a dynamic, therapeutic medicine. Samuel Hahneman brilliantly discovered that this process increases the curative power of the medicines whilst eliminating harmful side-effects. Living organisms are highly sensitive to these stimulating doses which homeopaths observe lead to a powerful healing response.
Homeopathic remedies can safely be taken alongside conventional treatment. When prescribed by a qualified homeopath remedies are suitable for everyone.
Homeopathic remedies are tested on humans, not animals.
