Homeopathic remedies are used to stimulate the body’s own natural healing ability in order to bring balance and well-being to the whole organism.
Balance and Harmony
Every minute of every day, the body is striving to keep all its systems and functions regulated and in harmony, its energies constantly adjusting to demands being put upon it to keep in best, balanced health. If the stresses of our pressured, busy lives overwhelm the body’s capacity to cope, symptoms arise and stay if the body cannot achieve equilibrium. This is when we become ill but it is also the best our body can do in the circumstances. A homeopath recognises symptoms as signs of an overall disharmony and aims to support the body to resolve symptoms and achieve balance once more. All symptoms – physical, emotional and mental – are seen by the homeopath as inter-connected. In a consultation, the person’s history, health picture and personality are all taken into account when choosing a prescription, the aim being to find and treat the underlying cause of the body’s imbalance.
Like Cures Like
Homeopathy was developed by Dr Samuel Hahneman (1755 – 1843), a German chemist and physician. The word “homeopathy” means “similar suffering” and an important principle is the Law of Similars or Like Cures Like which means that a substance that can cause disease in a living organism when given in a large dose can also be used to cure that disease when given in very small doses. An everyday example of this is using onion – which causes eyes and nose to water profusely – for the common cold. Thus, homeopathy is a matching process: finding a remedy which has the ability to produce the symptoms it is employed to cure. This observation of healing has been known and put to use practically since before the time of Hippocrates.
An individual prescription
Each person experiences their illness in their own, unique way and a second important aspect of homeopathic treatment is that patients are given individual, tailor-made prescriptions to suit their constitution and level of health rather than a “one size fits all” approach. There are thousands of homeopathic medicines from which to select a precise match.
Preparation and Safety
Remedies are given as pills or drops and are prepared from plants, minerals and other natural sources. They are prepared by successively diluting and shaking the chosen substance (termed “succussion”) – which Samuel Hahneman brilliantly discovered increased the curative power of the medicines. Living organisms are highly sensitive to these stimulating doses which homeopaths observe lead to a healing response.
The preparation of homeopathic medicines means that they do not create side-effects: in the 200 – year history of homeopathy not a single remedy has been withdrawn because it has caused ill-effects. They can safely be taken alongside conventional treatment. When prescribed by a qualified homeopath remedies are suitable for everyone.
Homeopathic remedies are tested on humans, not animals.
Homeopathy is a well-regulated and safe system of medicine that does not create side-effects. It can be used for babies, in pregnancy and for people with complex health conditions.
